Arab Diet

The Bedouins of the Arabian Peninsula, Middle East and North Africa rely on a diet of dates, dried fruit, nuts, wheat, barley, rice, and meat.

What is the food culture like?

Middle Eastern cuisine varies by region and is one of the healthiest, since it incorporates lean proteins, healthy fats, vegetables, and grains into almost every dish. Rich spices, seeds, and herbs (notably za'atar and cumin) sets it apart from European cuisines.

What are some common foods consumed?

Grains are the basis of the Middle Eastern diet, including wheat, rice or barley. Bread in every shape and sizes, also known as Kubz, is a universal food eaten at nearly every meal. Common dishes include meat kebabs, dolma, falafel, yoghurt and shawarma.

In many Arab countries, people use olive oil in cooking and as a hair tonic. Chickpeas are another staple of the Middle East. They are the primary ingredient of falafels and hummus, perhaps the two best-known Middle Eastern dishes.
