Eastern European Diet

The cuisine of Eastern Europe is a blend of hearty rural dishes such as steamed  dumplings, saurkraut, beetroot soup, millet porridge with pumpkins, turnip stew with carrots and onions, and cranberry mashed with sugar. 

What is the food culture like?

Meaty soups, stews and dumplings are popular. Horseradish and beetroot, dill, juniper, pepper, sour cream, curd cheese, poppy seed and ginger are typical ingredients used.

 

Other common flavours include paprika and peppers. Fish and salads refresh palates similar to the Mediterranean style of eating salads.

What are some common foods consumed?​

Cheeses (Pag island cheese) including Twarog/ twarozek/twarog wiejski, which is a full-fat cottage cheese/curd cheese added to risotto and pasta. Sour cream is used in soups and stews. 

 

Yoghurt is very popular as a drink and is also used in soups, salads and desserts.

Common sweets include makowiec, which is a poppy seed cake, and drozdzówka is used in Polish cheese cakes, doughnuts and pancakes.
